Ivan van Rooyen
Owner / Chief Flight Instructor and DFE Helicopters
Ivan is our passionate and highly qualified Chief Flight Instructor. Ivan was born and raised in Johannesburg. He started flying helicopters when he was in Grade 11 at school. He obtained his PPL before his driver’s licence. When Ivan finished school, he studied full time for his commercial pilot’s licence, which he obtained in June 2008. After completing his night, instrument and single-turbine ratings, he was trained by ATS to become a helicopter instructor. On the successful completion of his training, Ivan was employed by ATS as a full time Pilot. We are very proud that Ivan obtained his Grade I and DFE II status in May 2012 making him the youngest DFE in the country. His motivation, passion and dedication makes him a very popular Instructor. He has since then bought over ATS and his passion for the company is still seen in all that he does.



Dean Casey
Pilot / Grade III Instructor
Dean is an aviation fanatic. Early in life, his goal was to become an astronaut. While that was not possible, flying aeroplanes was. He achieved his fixed wing pilot’s license before he could drive to the airport. Dean is a mechanical engineer, specializing in structural analysis. He was part of the structural team of the new Mini. He was selected to part of the design team of the Euro fighter in the UK but opted to return to SA and further his career in software development instead. Over the years Dean has pursued new goals in the flying world, including flying and instructing on helicopters. His most fun adventure was a three week "flying jaunt" around Florida (USA) and the Bahamas. He has a passion for teaching and sharing the love of flying to others.
Eduan Roelofse
Pilot / Grade II instructor
Eduan dreamed about flying a helicopter at a young age after watching the TV series Airwolf, he pursued that dream in 2009 when he started with his training. Eduan joined the ATS family in February 2015 on a freelance basis after completing his Grade II instructors rating. His commitment towards success is the reason that he is part of the ATS team.
Christoph Andrykowsky
Pilot / Grade II Instrcutor
Christoph, a German and French National, holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) on both Fixed Wing & Helicopters as well as the South African Fixed Wing ATPL and Helicopter Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), he accumulated more than 2700 hours in Sub-Saharan Africa and USA, privately and for business over the last 23 years. He has close to 800 hours of instruction, rated on both fixed and rotor-wing, with both the SACAA and the FAA. In addition he holds: Class 2 test pilot game ratings, Agricultural game rating, Instrument, Night and tail-wheel game ratings. He passed all his US helicopter qualifications with the Robinson Factory test pilot Tim Tucker in Long Beach, CA and is currently the contracted pilot for SAFOMAR the importer of Enstrom, MD and Sikorsky Helicopters in Southern Africa. With Christoph’s FAA accreditation to conduct FAA flight reviews in SA, he is definitely an asset to ATS.
Byron Peters
Pilot / Grade II Instructor
Byron grew up in Durban and moved to Johannesburg in July 2011 to instruct in the aviation capital of Africa. He joined the ATS Family in April 2015 as a full time instructor after 4 years instructing in the Johannesburg area, he felt he needed to move onto a new challenge and work with the passionate team that have been growing ATS noticeably over the past few years.
Shane Uren
Shane was born in Alberton and spent his High School years in Centurion. He started with his Fixed Wing flying in 2008 and obtained his Commercial Pilot Licence in 2010. Shane joined ATS in 2010 to obtain his Helicopter PPL and qualified as a Helicopter Commercial Pilot within 3 months. He has since been a Fixed Wing and Helicopter Charter Pilot with ATS and he intends to complete his Grade III instructor rating, making him an important role player in the ATS team.
Shaun Barendsen
Pilot / Grade II Instructor
Shaun joined ATS Helicopters in May 2008 to do his night rating and since then he has completed his Commercial Pilots licence, Instructors licence and numerous conversion to various turbine aircraft. Shaun has a passion for flying and became part of the ATS family whilst still working in the IT industry and has done all the training and exams part time. Because of his passion, Shaun has joined ATS on all the mountain flying courses as well as the coastal flying weekends. It is such a pleasure to have him on the team to fill in when he is available for Instruction and Charters. His passion and dedication is exactly why he is a part of the ATS team.


Conrad Mouton
Administration Officer
Hi, my name is Conrad. I am employed as an Administration Officer, dealing with airworthiness, SMS, QA and stores. I have been a lasting member of the ATS team, having started working part time in 2012. I have gone from working in OPS, to driving errands to the SACAA, to my current position in the company. I believe I have proven myself to be a competent member of the ATS MAINTENANCE team. I’m always happy to lend a hand and support those around me. I am in the process of working towards my CPL (H), with plans to complete my instructors’ rating early in 2016.
Godknows Ncube
Workshop Assistant
Hi, my name is Godknows. I have been with ATS maintenance since the beginning of the company. I am an incredibly hard worker with a keen interest in aviation. I do my best learn and adapt to every new challenge presented to me. Having earned the nickname “Hawkeye” for my sharp eye, I am entrusted with the day-to-day organisation of the ATS Maintenance workspace and workshop. I am in the process of becoming an pprentice Maintenance Engineer with hopes to become a fully qualified Aviation Maintenance Engineer in the near future.
Vaughan Powell
Accountable Manager and Chief Aviation Maintenance Engineer
Hi, my name is Vaughan. I am employed as the Accountable Manager and Chief Aviation Maintenance Engineer at ATS Maintenance. I have been involved in building ATS Maintenance from the ground up, always promoting an environment where safety, quality, respect and client satisfaction which are the keys to success. I bring over 25 years of industry experience to the table and I’m always happy to provide assistance and guidance to those who require it I shall continue to develop ATS maintenance to its fullest potential.
